The Grand Rapids Ballet and the Grand Rapids Ballet Junior Company join forces to present one of the most celebrated ballets of all time! The music of Tchaikovsky and the choreography of Petipa produced a collaboration that marked a pinnacle of Russian ballet in the 19th century. We are thrilled to bring this epic story to our audience in a performance perfect for all ages. You will revel in the classic beauty of this magical ballet.

"Sleeping Beauty is the grandest of all the 19th-century classical ballets, the most
complex in detail, the most fairy-tale-like of the fairy tales..."
~The New York Times

A little history...

Sleeping Beauty was first performed in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg with music composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and original choreography by Marius Petipa. The ballet's premiere received more favorable accolades than Swan Lake and it has remained one of the most famous classical ballets.

"This is one of those classic ballets that everyone thinks of when you say 'ballet.' I think it will be a great evening for the whole family. We wanted to do Sleeping Beauty as a collaboration between the professional dancers and the school. The opportunity for our students to perform on stage in a professional production at their age is extremely important for them." ~Patricia Barker, GRB Artistic Director

Some fun facts about Grand Rapids Ballet's production...

* Sleeping Beauty features over 100 characters, danced by 23 Company dancers and 50 Junior Company dancers.
* The production will be performed at the Company's Peter Martin Wege Theatre, a theater specifically designed for dance, with a sprung floor and stadium style theater seating. This intimate theater features 300 seats in just 11 rows.
* Over 70% of the costumes you will see on stage were made right here in the GRB Costume Shop, including the incredible Carabosse costume which took approximately 80 hours to create, from design to finish.
* The Company and Junior Company dancers are working tirelessly in the studio, learning two full-length ballets at once - a huge feat for any dancer! They have been rehearsing for both Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker since early September.

"Sleeping Beauty is the ultimate test for any ballet company. It demands the highest level of classical technique and pushes dancers to their physical limits. And in what other work can one find so many challenging solo variations and intricate corps numbers jam packed into one magnificent evening?" ~National Post (Canada)
